Campbell County

Campbell County was formed 1 February 1782 from Bedford County and was named for William Campbell, one of the heroes of the Battle of Kings Mountain. Part of Campbell was lost to Appomattox County when it was created in 1845 and again in 1848. In 1902, the independent city of Lynchburg was created. Since then, Campbell has continued to decrease in size as the city of Lynchburg has grown. Campbell consists of 511 square miles and the county seat is Rustburg.
